Signava is a trading app, not a religious authority. This page summarises the main arguments; for a ruling that applies to you, consult a qualified scholar of Islamic finance.

The four main concerns

  • Riba (interest). Borrowing that charges interest is prohibited. Leverage and some funding mechanisms can involve interest-like costs.
  • Gharar (excessive uncertainty). Contracts where the subject or outcome is extremely uncertain are problematic.
  • Maysir (gambling). Pure speculation with no underlying value resembles gambling.
  • Lawful use. The asset itself and what it's used for must be permissible.

The main scholarly positions

Permissible with conditions

Many contemporary scholars hold that cryptocurrencies can be treated as a form of property or currency, so buying and selling them on the spot market — where you pay in full and own the coin — can be permissible, as long as the coin has real use, there's no interest or deception, and trading isn't done in a gambling-like way.

Not permissible

Some scholars and religious bodies consider all cryptocurrency impermissible because of its volatility, lack of a central issuer, and use in illegal activity.

Futures and leverage

Most scholars who allow spot trading still consider leveraged futures and margin trading impermissible, because they usually involve borrowed money with interest-like charges and trading assets you don't hold.

What this means in practice

ActivityCommon view among scholars who permit crypto
Spot buying and selling with your own moneyGenerally permissible, with conditions
Futures with leverageGenerally impermissible
Earning interest by lending cryptoGenerally impermissible
Coins tied to prohibited activitiesImpermissible

Signava offers both spot and futures signals. Users who follow the view that only spot trading is permissible can turn on the Spot feed and leave Futures off — see spot vs futures.

Frequently asked questions

Is spot crypto trading halal?

Many contemporary scholars consider buying and selling cryptocurrencies with real utility on the spot market permissible, provided there is no interest, no deception and no excessive gambling-like speculation. Others consider all cryptocurrency impermissible. Ask a qualified scholar you trust.

Is crypto futures trading halal?

Leveraged futures are widely considered impermissible by scholars because they commonly involve borrowing with interest-like charges, trading assets you don't own, and high uncertainty.
